Himalayan Parallel with New American

Vegetable Momo is served with a hearty sauce made with carrots, tomatoes, and fennel. The green and orange color palette represents blessings of nature.

For ethnic food lovers, Sunnyside-Woodside-Jackson Heights in Queens is a golden route to savor authentic fare from every country as well as new variations with NY twists. The SWJ dining scene is particularly exciting today thanks to new restaurants which have sprung up in the past couple of years. One such contribution is Dawa’s, which serves Himalayan and modern American cuisines.

Born in Nepal and raised in India, Chef/Co-owner Dawa had worked in several established restaurants in New York and as a personal chef before opening this restaurant. She cooks modern American dishes and her father makes Himalayan ones. So, don’t expect a fusion menu, but you can enjoy two completely different cuisines composed seamlessly.

Regardless of cuisine styles, what’s important for them is to use fresh, locally sourced ingredients that are grown on environmentally conscious farms. Try Vegetable Momo, a signature item from their Himalayan plate menu. It’s a vegetable version of popular Himalayan steamed dumplings made with wrappers containing yu-choi greens and with potato and yu-choi stuffing. Dress it with creamy sauce made with pureed vegetables before digging in. Recommended from the American menu is Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich. Crunchy deep-fried, buttermilk-marinated chicken is embraced by brioche buns and accentuated by vinegar-cured onion and homemade jalapeno aiori, stimulating your taste buds from every angle. Rustic yet chic atmosphere is well attuned with their foods, making you feel comfortably lost in Dawa’s unique dining universe.

Crispy fried chicken is made with no antibiotics/no hormones chicken breast. As you bite into it, the umami from the succulent meat bursts in your mouth.

Everyone instantly feels relaxed in the rustic ambience of Dawa’s.
