Port Washington might be best known for its scenic harbor, but don’t forget to check out Main Street. Here you can find Nara Japanese Foods, a store that aside from being stocked with Japanese DVDs, household goods and sweets, has a sushi counter in the back that caters to its lunchtime clientele.
According to veteran sushi chef Makoto Takahashi, all of the items are made on the spot or after receiving an order from a customer. Nothing is left to sit, which explains the extreme freshness of all of the offerings. There is an assortment of 20 different signature rolls and several bento boxes, but the chirashi sushi and sushi sets are not to be missed. The Chirashi Sushi ($9.95), one of the most popular selections, features tuna, yellowtail, salmon, eel, squid, scallops and octopus, fluke covered with salmon roe and seaweed. The three sushi sets A-C range from 5-10 pieces and substitutions can be made as desired. For an extra $2 you can order a different type of roll with the “Choice” option. Takahashi’s handiwork is sure to please, so next time head out to Long Island to try mixing and matching yourself!
