If you stay on the N train to its final stop in Ditmars Avenue, Astoria, you can find the newest Japanese restaurant on the block. Momiji, which opened two months ago, sets itself apart from the competition by offering numerous original rolls and daily specials. Some examples of rolls are the Sex and the City (soft-shelled crab, cucumber, avocado and lettuce with spicy salmon and crunch on top) and the Spicy Titanic (spicy tuna plus salmon, ikura and avocado). Momiji is always coming up with new sushi tapas and creative rolls to satisfy its clientele, mostly local families and couples. There are 2-3 new specials each day, depending on what’s fresh. Two of the recent daily specials were the Spicy Tuna Tortilla and Momiji Salsa. The former replaces rice with a soft tortilla and adds to it spicy tuna, scallions, avocado, tobiko and Momiji’s special wasabi sauce. The variety of colors on top of this four-piece appetizer is due to different types of tobiko. The Momiji Salsa consists of shrimp, octopus, salmon, whitefish, green pepper, red onion, cucumber and salsa sauce, and this combination is as delicious as it sounds. Why not check out the latest dishes Momiji has to offer?
Momiji Salsa
The daily special Momiji Salsa incorporates four different types of tobiko (wasabi, yuzu, black and flying fish), making it both aesthetically and palate pleasing. It is a bit hit among customers so make sure to catch it before it goes off the menu.
