In a mere four months, Tara Japanese Cuisine has impressively altered the sushi landscape along Queens’ historic Northern Boulevard. As the first omakase restaurant of its kind in Little Neck, NY, Tara is bringing one of the hottest sushi trends from Manhattan to the suburbs, and with nothing lost in translation. And supporting them is True World Foods, renowned for supplying restaurants with the best fresh fish from Japan and around the world.
Started by Chef and Owner Jimmy Wong, Owner Liz Leung, and Manager Carmen Fun. Tara is the culmination of two decades of experience. Chef Jimmy has cut his teeth at some of NYC’s finest sushi restaurants, and brings his skills to beautifully compose sushi and sashimi – from presentation to flavor, everything is carefully considered and impeccably executed. The menu offers a plethora of raw and cooked items, but the pride and joy is the 12-piece and 16-piece Omakase Tastings. Offering the best fish of the season, the chef presents a level of sushi artistry that was once associated with long journeys or deep pockets.
Chef Jimmy prides himself not just on his knowledge of sushi, but also being able to pass it on to newcomers and aficionados alike. At his sushi counter, he will happily educate his diners about where each fish comes from, and what flavors to expect – from the buttery texture of toro, to the deep flavor and chew of mackerel, to the creamy essence of the sea in uni. This adds a layer of understanding that lets diners further appreciate every toothsome piece, all of which dance on the palate.
“The trust I am building with my customers through my relationship with them is one of the most important things to me. And this is the same kind of trust I have with True World Foods,” says Chef Jimmy. He continued, “Because the fish quality is so high, I can confidently tell people that they are getting the best. And because I trust my representative, I know that when there is any issue, they will be there to take care of it so that my business is running smoothly. I would not choose anyone else.”
While the quality of fish may be the most recognizable pillar of good sushi restaurants, it is indeed the trust that is built between purveyor, restaurant, and customer that lasts for the long run – and separates the good from the great.
The omakase offers standout pieces like a fluke fin and ikura (top), and appetizers like the bluefin tuna, uni, and caviar (above).
As the love for uni soars, so do delicious combinations like the Wagyu, Uni and Caviar (above), and uni served in its shell (below).
Chef Jimmy’s focus is trained on the fish on his cutting board, but he is also always thinking passionately about his diners.
